‘Staraya Lagoda’ is a village in the St Petersburg region, famous for its phenomenal history, and some time ago it was one of ten largest cities in Russia.
In modern day, what really distinguishes ‘Staraya Lagoda’ from other villages and towns, is the old ruins of a fortress, standing on the cliff of the river Volhov, and the historic churches on the outskirts of the ruins. Up to 1703, ‘Lagoda’ was referred to as a town, but in 2003, during the 1250th anniversary of ‘Staraya Lagoda’ it was named the ‘Historic Capital of Northern Russia’.
The old fortress of ‘Staraya Ladoga’, what now became the heart of the old village, is standing on the confluence of rivers Elena/Ladozhka and Volhov. During the age of ‘Novgorodskaya Russia’, this fortress was a valuable asset, as it was the only port which was available to the larger sea vessels, as they were unable to sail further down the river Volhov.
In the last few years, ‘Staraya Lagoda’ was often spoken about, but some mysteries will always remain uncovered, even to the historians. But the ordinary people, who aren’t professionals in the field of history and archeology, are the ones who hold the knowledge about the true historic past of the ‘Historic Capital’, including things such as: how ‘Lagoda’ became the historic capital; Prince Rurik and Oleg; the ‘Church of St George’ and so on.
The large area of ‘Staraya Lagoda’, stretching over 190 hectors of land, is the place of 135 historic monuments. And to this day, some underground monasteries and burrows where treasures used to be hidden, remain mysteries; without even knowing the date of when they were built, the potential of ‘Staraya Lagoda’ is far greater than we can imagine.
GlavTourOperator would strongly recommend ‘Staraya Lagoda’ as a prestigious open air showground for events. The company staff would be happy to offer their services in organizing and booking trips to ‘Staraya Lagoda’ for you.
